September 2005

If you’re a fan of aleatoric music (like I am), you’ll appreciate this:

The music of The Books has always amazed me. There is a sound clip in The Lemon of Pink (part 1) that we all have thought to be quite funny.

“For the he first time in the history of the world, a young girl climbed into a tree one day…she climbed down from the tree next day…God bless her.”

Well, I was listening to Smells Like Content off their new album, Lost and Safe, and they used parts of the same clip, this time something a little bit more recognizable so I could Google it.  Here is what I found:  Tales from the top of a tree by G.K. Sharma.

I know, I’m a nerd.  Listen to the entire discography and check out their most awesome website: http://www.thebooksmusic.com/.

Today’s weather is absolutely fabulous. After the longest summer ever, temperatures are finally settling down into the mid 80’s. As we wait for Rita to drop her 5 or more inches of rain over our poor dry state, hip kids everywhere are bringing their sweaters down from storage. We wipe the dust off the trunks and hold our breath for fear that the stench of mothballs might overpower us, though it’s nothing that a few dryer sheets can’t handle.

And I feel, so much depends on the weather

The sky’s overcast motion and breezes that seem to come from all directions enchant us. Spellbound, we open all windows, turn off the air conditioning, and wait for the slightly salty taste of rain. We turn off the digital cable and set the ipod aside in favor of the rustle of leaves, the slow passing of cars, and the talk of neighbors, children, and animals. We enjoy the concert of our surroundings.

Musicians wrestle everywhere

I’m reading my discourse analysis homework for Language Theory—about talk and conversation. I’m fascinated, but contain my excitement to small chuckles of glee and minor shifts in body position on the couch.

Talk is cheap.

Amos rests close by (he always does), gazing out the window with pompous gentle ears at those outside cats, his tail batting lackadaisically.

So everything has in fact changed. It’s funny to me how September is consistantly a time of change. I should have known that after the wild, wild summer would come a dull, busy fall.

I’m usually at UALR for 11 to 13 hours a day during the week. I’m taking the hardest class ever, language theory, which deals mainly with linguistics and discourse analysis. The class I’m teaching is fun, but involves a lot of prep work.

I bought a house that I love, but I have no time to work on it, let alone finish moving in. I’m living with a best friend and an ex-boyfriend. Trust me, it’s not as bad as it sounds, though I miss living alone.

Here’s the money shot:

Otherwise I’ve been quite crabby and irritable lately–a trend that I hope will subside when September ends, or when people and places stop disappointing me.
